2006
NFL DRAFT UNDERCLASSMEN UPDATE:
By: John Murphy (Next Level Scouting, Inc.)
The following is a list of potential underclassmen who
may decide to make themselves eligible for the 2006
NFL Draft. Our staff has judiciously evaluated each
player's potential since the start of this season, since
the rise in junior and even red-shirt sophomore prospects
that decide to enter the draft has consistently risen
over each of the past ten years. Players have two options
when thinking about entering the draft, they can either
submit their paperwork to the NFL Advisory Committee,
who will respond back with a "Round" grade between now
and early January, the second option is for a prospect
to freely give up their final year or years of college
eligibility without receiving their grade from the league
office. So, while it is not certain which preference
players will opt for most over the next three weeks,
the one certainty is that between 35-45 underclassmen
are likely to join the ranks of next April's NFL Draft
by the end of the second week of the New Year. Players
that make their initial intention to join this year's
draft class can opt out by January 18th, 2006, as long
as they have not signed with a certified NFL agent,
the final day to declare is January 15th, 2006.
QUARTERBACK:
OMAR JACOBS (Bowling Green)… thought to be the most
likely candidate of the signal caller's group to enter
the draft earlier this season it now seems doubtful,
as he suffered a separated left shoulder (non-throwing)
earlier this year, and would probably need time to properly
recover 100% from that injury during the off-season…
that could hamper the preparation time he needs to showoff
his skill level in February at the Combine… he could
use the extra year of work on-the-field, and will definitely
need the expert touch of training with a "True" quarterback
coach in order to fix some of his mechanical flaws,
as well as that long windup he exhibits on many of his
throws… just about 6040, 220-224 pounds… has been timed
in the high-4.5-to-low-4.6 range in the 40... has been
non-committal on his future plans the past few weeks,
saying he would make a final decision after his team's
final game, but he had been researching agents and trying
to obtain as much information about his NFL options,
as possible during the season… as of today, his mother
has been handling the business side of this matter,
while her son seems equally worried about the idea of
losing his starting running back, two receivers and
starting left tackle to graduation… remember the MAC
has done very well with producing quarterbacks in recent
years, plus the conference has turned out a total of
55 NFL draft choices dating back to the 1998 draft…
VINCE YOUNG (Texas)… consistently has proclaimed
to local and national media that he will return to Austin
for his senior year… the Longhorns winning the National
Championship it could swing his decision… would be first
in line for the Heisman Trophy should he return next
season… a phenomenal natural athlete who is still a
work-in-progress in terms of being a perfect fit for
many NFL offensive systems… roughly 6046, 228-233 pounds…
has been timed in the high-4.4-to-low-4.5 range in the
40... struggles with his accuracy on short-to-intermediate
passes at times… but shows good poise, leadership skills
and displays the intangibles to become an above-average
signal caller in a system that caters to his particular
ability… his time in NYC seems to have potentially motivated
him to follow in the footsteps of Matt Leinhart (USC)
and attempt to win possible back-to-back titles and
his own Heisman Trophy… his family lives in the Houston-area,
so they could wait one more year for the rewards of
the NFL… winning or losing the National Championship
game still seems to be the key to his final decision…
however, there are no-less than 8-10 people running
around behind-the-scenes telling prospective agents
that they can get them "In the Door" for the right form
of compensation… to date though, Young himself, as kept
his business very quiet…
BRADY QUINN (Notre Dame)… his remarkable junior
year would likely vault him towards the middle of the
first round if not higher into the Top-10… roughly 6036,
228-232 pounds… has been timed in the 4.70 range in
the 40... Combines above-average arm strength with a
quick release, as well as the poise to stand tall in
the pocket under pressure… athletic enough to avoid
the rush and gain yards if he needs to run with the
ball… has matured greatly in the huddle… throws a tight
spiral and shows the ability to drop the long ball in
the proper spot where only his receiver can catch the
ball… it seems coach Charlie Weis will keep all of his
talented juniors in order to make a legitimate run at
next year's National Championship… he has listened to
all of his head coaches advice thus far, so it would
be a surprise to see him make the early jump, although
several high-profiled quarterback agents have been on
his recruiting trail… while he may lack the experience,
records and media exposure of USC's Matt Leinhart, he
is the guy who might possess the most pure physical
talent of any quarterback in college football… would
challenge to be the top overall choice in the 2007 NFL
Draft if he returns for his final year in South Bend…
which according to most insiders is the decision he
will make after the team's Fiesta Bowl contest versus
Ohio State…
MARCUS VICK (Virginia Tech)… seen by some scouts
as potentially being a better passer at this stage of
his career than his brother, Michael, was, but he is
still inexperienced behind center and has not produced
ideal results against his toughest opponents… has added
nearly 20 pounds of bulk/muscle to his frame since joining
the team… roughly 6000, 213-216 pounds… has been timed
4.28-4.33 range in the 40-yard dash to go along with
36" vertical and 300-pound bench press… struggles some
at making quick and/or proper reads against opposing
defenses that change up their blitz and coverage packages…
having red-shirted last season it would seem more likely
that he returns to play in 2006 before looking into
his draft options, which by that time could equal that
of a potential first round choice… there have also been
rumors that his older brother and current NFL star will
have created his own sports agency company by this time
next year in order to keep Marcus' business in the family…
DREW STANTON (Michigan State)… started off on
fire through the first month or so of the year, but
was then inconsistent throughout the mid-to-late portion
of this season… most of East Lansing is praying that
he will return for his senior year, which has been the
path he has stated publicly that he will take… just
about 6036, 228 pounds… has been timed in the high 4.6-to-low-4.7
range in the 40... would most likely be taken no higher
than the second round of this year's draft, but could
improve his stock greatly if he were to obtain the chance
to participate in next year's Senior Bowl… his size,
athleticism and arm strength would surely excite pro
scouts during the practice week… has first round potential
given another year to mature and keeping learning the
position... although there are some area scouts that
cannot stop raving about his upside potential…
TYLER PALKO (Pittsburgh)… the lefty has had
a long and mostly tedious junior campaign… his offensive
line has let him down at times, and the high-profiled
weapons have not consistently produced the big plays
that were expected… however, his accuracy or lack there
of at times is the chief concern with his game, although
he has shown good toughness and leadership skills through
the hardest of times this season… not afraid to hold
onto the ball till the last second, but other times
will hold the ball too long, as he does not recognize
the coverage fast enough... roughly 6023, 220 pounds…
has been timed in the 4.60 range in the 40... it would
be a mistake for him to jump to the pros off of this
type of season, but some people around the program are
skeptical of the "Team" chemistry, and thus feel Palko
might be in-line to jump if he thought a day one selection
would be in his future…
JAMARCUS RUSSELL (LSU)… the dark horse of this
group to declare, although he has completed nearly 63%
of his passes… he also may have the strongest arm of
any quarterback in the college game, but it still needs
refinement on some of his short-to-intermediate routes…
roughly 6050, 242-250 pounds… while he ran between the
4.70-4.80 range in the 40 during his prep days he is
clearly more of a pocket passer, and at times struggles
against teams that use a variety of blitz packages…
the Tigers would in no way want to lose Russell to the
draft, but with Ryan Perrilloux and Matt Flynn waiting
in the wings it could be a legit option, plus the fact
that he has some family obligations that could be solved
by an early leap into the pros… his shoulder injury,
separated his left (non-throwing) shoulder in the SEC
title game loss to Georgia, would likely now prevent
any thoughts of an early departure… as he will not even
dress out for the team's Peach Bowl contest against
Miami, FL…
ARIES NELSON (Mississippi Valley State)… passed
for 2,492 yards and 18 touchdowns against nine interceptions
on 351 pass attempts, as a junior… multi-purpose threat,
as he also rushed for 254 yards and six additional scores…
improved his accuracy this season, completing 57.3%
of his passes… averaged close to 270 yards per game
through the air… top games came against Alcorn State,
Southern U. and Alabama State… needs to learn how to
find his secondary options faster… holds onto the ball
too long, as he was sacked 32 times… he's way too athletic
to get taken down that often… will fair much better
when he learns to step up into the pocket rather than
always looking to make a play with his legs when the
pocket fails… weighs in at just about 6030, 215 pounds…
has a big-time arm, very good athleticism and big-school
pedigree, since he transferred from Mississippi State…
had a falling out with coach Crooms after he was listed
as a backup on the depth chart after spring drills in
2004, so he left the Bulldogs' program in hopes of finding
an immediate starting job… MVSU insiders say he has
been a model citizen and seems to have matured into
a solid leader for their team with plenty of upside
potential… red-shirted his freshman year, so he has
one-year of eligibility remaining…
RUNNING BACK/FULLBACK:
REGGIE BUSH (USC)… had established himself as
a Top-3 pick, if he were to declare, even before his
award-winning performance against Fresno State… he has
displayed the type of game-breaking ability, as a runner,
receiver and return man, that could change the bleak
outlook of any organization that is lucky enough to
get their hands on him… ran 4.25 and 4.37 in the 40-yard
dash for the USC staff this past spring, plus he ran
10.42 in the 100-meters during his prep days, while
also turning heads in several other workout areas… Bush
has made several recent moves behind-the-scenes that
would make you believe he is going to be headed to the
NFL… first, he has insured himself against injury in
the upcoming title game against Texas by purchasing
a large insurance policy, similar to the one Willis
McGahee (Buffalo) bought before his game against Ohio
State a few years back… then, while there had not been
a formal announcement of a pending decision, the fact
that several high-profiled agents have sent-or-received
interest from associates of Bush would be a second clear
indication that we might be evaluating more of him sooner
than later… especially since after his recent Heisman
Trophy winning trip to New York City, several associates
have indicated that he setup seven agent interviews,
which wear spear-headed by Mike Ornstein, the well-known
national rep of Reebok with a group of three finalists
pending for a post-Rose Bowl decision… therefore a return
trip to NYC in late April is likely already circled
on Bush's 2006 calendar…
LAURENCE MARONEY (Minnesota)… while he's not
as exciting to watch as Bush, he's nearly as effective
with his battering ram style, which currently places
him among the Top-5 leading rushers in the country…
he's a powerful built (5110, 220 pounds) runner between
the tackles with the speed, 4.42-4.46 in the 40, to
take it the distance when he bounces it to the outside…
sophomore Gary Russell is waiting in the wings, so it
will not be surprising to see Maroney's name among the
declared list come January… has spent a fair amount
of time lining up agent interviews for the week following
the team's bowl game with several high-profiled names
included on that list… announced his intentions to declare
for the upcoming NFL Draft after their Liberty Bowl
loss to Virginia…
LENDALE WHITE (USC)… has easily proven to any
team in need of a starting running back that he can
handle being a workhorse back at the next level… school's
all-time leader in touchdowns, while sharing the backfield
with the possible future Heisman Trophy winner… any
time you can get your hands on a 6010, 232-238-pound
back with 4.5-4.55 speed and hands to match it's usually
a marriage made in the early portion of the draft… some
scouts wonder if he will have the true breakaway speed
to be an every-down back at the NFL, but should be productive
enough in other areas to help him earn a solid day one
grade… according to one current teammate, the Trojans
have promised him the workhorse gig if he returns, so
that he too could make a run for the Heisman, which
would drive up his draft stock… keep an eye out for
the agency being led by rap star Snoop Dogg and agent
Gary Uberstine, who also happens to represent Trojans
head coach Pete Carroll, if White opts for the land
of the NFL… he also seems to be using his cousin, NBA
standout guard Chauncey Billups, as a mentor-type for
his upcoming decision…
MICHAEL BUSH (Louisville)… might not be the
next "Big" thing, but he is most certainly the next
"BIG" back… an extraordinary athlete with a rare combination
of size, speed and vision… a former high school quarterback
now carries a 250-pound frame with the dexterity of
a player 50 pounds lighter… an absolute beast when it
comes to tackling him, he's able to run through most
defenders and has shown the balance to break free for
long gains after initial contact… roughly 6020, 248-255
pounds… has been timed in the 4.50 range in the 40...
playing in a passer-friendly offense, but may be inclined
to return since he has a strong sense of team and leadership…
has also been battling some late-season injuries…
BRIAN CALHOUN (Wisconsin)… decided to escape
the altitude of Colorado for the winter's of Wisconsin…
he's given Big Ten defenses a chilly reception, while
proving to be durable enough for full-time duty… while
he lacks ideal size, 5092, 194 pounds, the hometown
hero has an eye-opening burst, plus a second gear of
speed in the open field… many speculate that he can
run between 4.28-4.35 in the 40... the upside of his
straight-line speed is matched by his superior hands
as a receiver and better-than-advertised toughness for
his size… the change in head coaches could create an
opening for him to declare, which also seems especially
true since the team has already switched a pair of youngsters
from the defensive side of the ball into the backfield
for the start of next season… publicly has stated he
will review his options after the team's bowl game…
GERMAINE RACE (PITTSBURG STATE, KS)… while there
are not many Division II prospects that would entertain
the idea of declaring early, Race is taking a close
look at his options after gaining 5,031 yards and 75
touchdowns in his first 39 college contests… recently
rushed for 305 yards and three scores on just 23 carries
in a win over Truman State… has an excellent combination
of size (5110, 224 pounds), speed (4.45) and strength
(350-pound bench press)… Ronald Moore had a solid NFL
career (Arizona/NY Jets) after an outstanding career
with the Gorillas, so watch out if #22 captures the
Harlon Hill Trophy, as it could be a stepping-stone
to the pros… a pair of junior SEC running backs are
likely to request their draft grade after season's end,
as
KENNETH DARBY (Alabama) and KENNY IRONS (Auburn)
have both turned heads with their current level of play…
DARBY… has shown toughness as an inside runner, while
also displaying better-than-advertised hands out of
the backfield… but has not been a primary option inside
the red zone, scoring just three times this year… just
about 5100, 205-212 pounds… has been timed in the low-4.5
range in the 40... would be wise to return to school,
since he will be the primary go-to weapon for the Tides'
offense in 2006, which could increase his final grade…
IRONS… a former South Carolina transfer, has gained
over 1,100 yards over his last nine games… runs hard
while showing an impressive combination of balance and
speed once he gets past the line of scrimmage… his receiving
skills and ability to read the holes and cutback for
additional yardage have caught our eye, especially in
games against LSU and Alabama… roughly 5110, 195-202
pounds… has been timed in the mid-to-late 4.40 range
in the 40... his brother, David, is a senior defensive
back , and word around campus is that several agents
have been tempting the duo, so it's worth keeping closer
tabs on him… although there is an outside chance the
younger Irons could opt to return for a fifth-season,
since he has yet to use the red-shirt year that is available
to him…
MAURICE DREW (UCLA)… may lack the ideal size
to be an every down back, but is amazingly quick to
the hole and also shows great elusiveness in the open
field… has the added dimension of being a dangerous
return man, as well, having averaged over 29 yards per
punt return this year, including three touchdowns on
just 14 total returns, and 25 yards per kickoff return
for his career… just about 5075, 198-205 pounds, which
will concern some teams who feel shorter backs have
trouble handling blocking assignments, and there lack
of height creates an issue for the quarterback when
searching for a safety valve receiver out of the backfield…
however, he has 29 receptions already this season, averaging
close to 15 yards per catch… has very good upper-body
strength for his size, but equally impressive his how
he keeps his legs churning after initial contact… will
not turn 21 years-old until late March, 2006... missed
a few games due to a sprained right ankle last year…
he could raise up the charts thanks to his all-purpose
skills and the fact that he could run one of the best
40-times at this position… was sidelined for a portion
of their Sun Bowl victory over Northwestern with a slight
shoulder injury, but others confessed that the team
turned to their younger backs after finding out Drew's
intentions to potentially forego his senior year and
enter the NFL Draft…
GARRETT WOLFE (Northern Illinois)… gained 1,580
yards and 16 touchdowns, while averaging 6.5 yards per
carry, as a junior… added 22 receptions, but since he
was their primary weapon on the ground he failed to
return a single kick or punt; not a good stat for a
potential all-purpose back at the next level… has swift
hips and blazing speed once he gets to the second level…
was banged up during the season with a bit of a left
knee injury; missed parts of three games… even with
that he was able to pound out, yes 5070, 177-180-pound
back pounded out close to 600 yards on the ground in
his final two games of this season… has been timed between
4.33-4.39 in the 40-yard dash… he has accepted his fate
as a change-of-pace type back, so his willingness to
declare even with a mid-to-late round grade should surprise
very few if any…
TYRONE MOSS (Miami, FL)… had he not suffered
a late-season, November 5th, torn ACL in his left knee,
which will require up to six months of rehab, he would
have likely requested his current draft standing, and
leaned toward declaring if it came back with a top-three
round grade… tough, between the tackles runner who flashes
a second gear of speed, as well, but does not have that
third gear that would make him a sure-fire top two round
choice… runs low and hard, shows the ability to bounce
off the first defender… rushed for 701 yards, 12 touchdowns,
and averaged 5.1 yards per carry, but lacks ideal exposure
as a receiver out of the backfield; just one catch…
comes in just below 5100, 220-222 pounds… has been timed
in the 4.55-4.57 range in the 40... his work ethic,
attitude and desire to be the next highly successful
pro running back from UM would make us believe that
he will timeout better than his advertised 40-time…
has the ability to work himself into being one of the
Top-5 RB's for the 2007 NFL Draft…
LORENZO BOOKER (Florida State)… leads the team
with 550 yards rushing, while having added 35 catches
out of the backfield… averaging nearly five yards per
carry, but has scored only four touchdowns… was one
of the top-rated players in the country coming out of
high school, but has been a bit of an under-achiever
at times… has exhibited explosive straight-line speed
at times, yet he is not one of the team's primary kickoff
or punt returners this season… shows good elusiveness
in the open field, but needs to get stronger and run
with more of a determined effort after initial contact…
just about 5110, 187 pounds… has been timed between
4.42-4.45 in the 40... would like to be considered for
more of a heavy workload next season, but FSU has several
young backs, including Antone Smith, who are likely
to continue the rotation-based backfield setup… some
say he would prefer to sit the bench or be a role player
in the NFL rather than play another season like this
past one with the Seminoles… has requested his current
NFL grade, but it would be surprising if he was guaranteed
a spot in the first three rounds… looks to be more like
a Travis Minor-type prospect than Warrick Dunn (Atlanta)…
DESHAWN WYNN (Florida)… had the looks of being
a potential All-SEC back at the end of last season,
but has not been able to put it altogether during his
junior campaign… as it looks now, he would be part of
a rotation-based system in 2006, which has him very
concerned… shows flashes of potential, as a between
the tackles runner with good, but has not always shown
great breakaway speed… roughly 5110, 229 pounds… has
been timed between 4.48-4.55 in the 40... there is a
chance he could transfer either closer to home (Ohio)
or down to a powerhouse Division I-AA team, but for
now it seems like he will request his NFL grade, and
could opt for the draft even if he gets a late round
(fifth) grade…
COURTNEY LEWIS (Texas A&M)… has been injury-prone
throughout his career, but productive when he's on the
field… he has flashed breakaway speed, which would obviously
help his upside potential… just about 5100, 202-206
pounds… has been timed between 4.38-4.45 in the 40-yard
dash, some say he's come across as fast as 4.35... also
has good hands, runs hard and could be a viable backup
option over time… a lot here probably depends on what
happens with the team's coaching staff, although he
could also hope for a rejuvenated senior campaign or
even transfer if one of the Aggies' younger backs was
given the starting job next spring…
DEMETRIS SUMMERS (Ex-South Carolina)… was dismissed
from school for violating team policy, which was later
determined to be a failed drug test, potentially his
second or third during his time on-campus… opted to
sit out this season, and workout locally with a hand-picked
trainer that had ties to another former troubled Gamecocks
running back, Derek Watson, so many believe that he
will sign with Watson's agent and make himself eligible
for the draft… has a lot of natural ability on the field,
but has been injury-prone at times, and may lack the
maturity to accept the responsibility that comes along
with being a professional athlete… said to be in fine
shape, having also improved his 40-times, which previously
were expected to be not much faster than the 4.60 range…
E.B. HASLEY (Illinois)… fell into a rotation-based
system under Coach Zook, which failed to provide him
with the opportunity to exhibit his ability… finished
third on the team in rushing, but has previously shown
decent outside speed, as well as very good hands out
of the backfield; once caught 11 passes in one game…
proven to be a solid all-purpose type back, as he can
also provide a team with a solid option on punt returns…
roughly 5096, 205 pounds… has been timed between 4.45-4.50
in the 40... will be on course to graduate in just over
three years (May 2006), so there is a chance he could
request his grade or seek a possible transfer point…
CHAUNCEY WASHINGTON (USC)… has a chance to get
his academic standing with the Trojans straight over
the next few weeks, as he sat out this season to concentrate
on improving his grades… should he not be eligible for
the spring than his choices would boil down to declaring
early or transferring down to the Division I-AA level,
so that he could be instantly eligible to play next
season… local insiders believe that he would opt for
the NFL before dropping down a level, mainly from a
prestige standpoint, since he feels like it would be
a step down for him to play anywhere other than USC…
which is not hard to believe, as in one of the team's
spring scrimmages this past year he took a long screen
for a touchdown, and also scored on another long run…
in fact, several teammates say he once caught Reggie
Bush from behind during a practice a few years ago;
remember Bush ran 10.42 in the 100-meters during his
prep days and Washington ran 10.48/10.50 at that distance…
he's missed time with a stress fracture in his right
ankle, as a freshman, and also had a knee injury in
high school… roughly 6000, 210-215 pounds… ran 4.47
in the 40-yard dash for the coaches at USC last spring…
although inexperienced on the field and academic/durability
questions would also be raised he could earn a late
round grade based on his size/speed/potential…
BRIAN LEONARD (Rutgers)… is the only pure fullback
among the nation's Top-100 leading rushers… grounded
out 740 yards and 11 touchdowns on the ground, while
leading the team with 55 catches and six additional
scores in-spite of the fact that he is clearly the primary
on every opposing defensive coordinator's radar… has
gained 3,926 yards of total offense in three years,
including 22 games where he has gained at least 100
yards of total offense… made several big plays in the
team's 45-40 bowl game loss to Arizona State; six catches
for 98 yards, as well as ten carries for 46 yards… just
over 6010, 233-238 pounds… has been timed in the early-to-mid
4.6 range in the 40-yard dash… he also has fine hands,
as he has caught a pass in 34 straight games, he also
could potentially be evaluated as a one-back in the
right scheme… those close to the team insist that he
has already promised to return, but he has been making
a few new calls to feel out the market in recent days,
so he may not have fully made up his mind yet…
WIDE RECEIVER:
JASON HILL (Washington State)… has continued
to be the best deep threat weapon in the Pac-Ten not
playing in the state of California… averaging 17.6 yards
per catch, as a junior, while adding 13 scores… shows
very good hands, but has a tendency to body catch a
few balls, which is something he needs to work on… also
not the most physical guy when it comes to blocking
or getting off the line… just under 6010, 208 pounds…
has been timed in the mid-to-late 4.4 range in the past…
spent time last spring/summer reviewing his possible
options with a few close family members, which would
seem to promote the fact that he will at least request
his current draft grade, since he has interviewed a
handful of agents… has an excellent vertical game, but
has also shown that he is not afraid to catch the ball
in the middle of the field… may not be a sure-fire #1
wide receiver for the next level, but would be an above-average
#2 threat for most NFL teams…
JEFF SAMARDZIJA (Notre Dame)… it would be hard
to argue that any player has improved their draft status
at this position more than him… his acrobatic catches,
yards after catch, downfield blocking are enough to
make him a legitimate day one selection… when you add
to it his natural athleticism, size and the fact that
he might be a first-round selection in next year's MLB
Draft you can see why several are now comparing him
to players like Ed McCaffrey and Joe Jurevicius… the
fact that he is the potential ace of the Irish's pitching
staff and would re-join Quinn, Anthony Fasano and a
returning Rheema McKnight on what would be a very formidable
offense next season should be enough to keep him in
South Bend for his senior campaign…
GREG LEE (Pittsburgh)… sure his team failed
to live up to expectations, but when opportunity has
presented itself he has taken full advantage… averaged
over 19 yards per catch this season; may have played
his best game against West Virginia… roughly 6020, 200
pounds… has been timed in the 4.50-4.53 range in the
40-yard dash, but some staff members say he could time
in the mid-to-late 4.4 range after more training… you
would believe that Lee's future at Pitt could be tied
to the decision of his quarterback, Palko, as it would
be tough for him to secure a standout senior campaign
with an unproven signal caller under center… he has
kept his options very close to the vest, so his decision
is still wide open… area scouts have varied in their
opinion of his current NFL potential, as some see him
as a possible second rounder, while others have speculated
that he would still be on the board on the second day
of the draft… the most recent word from sources around
the "Lee" camp was that he had been interviewing agents,
which turned out to be the very case, as he announced
his intentions to join this year's NFL Draft class,
while signing with Michael Huyghue of Axcess Sports…
PAUL WILLIAMS (Fresno State)… has 40 catches
for 682 yards and seven touchdowns, as a junior… averaging
17 yards per catch, including a school-record 98-yard
reception versus Boise State… had four catches for 62
yards and one score against USC… has a long, lanky body
with the frame to carry ten-or-more pounds of added
muscle without sacrificing any of his speed or athleticism…
roughly 6020, 200 pounds… has been timed between 4.48-4.54
in the 40... also has a 38"-40" vertical… played football
and basketball, while also being a sprinter on the track
& field team during his prep days… brother, Curtis,
was a standout defensive back at Washington before suffering
a neck injury and later passing away… said to be one
of the team's best athletes, but struggled early in
his career to find playing time at receiver, but was
always a very good special teams performer… speculation
around campus is that he will request his current grade
after the team's bowl game, mainly because he feels
his value could be at its highest, and wonders how much
consistency the team will have at quarterback next season…
shame if he were to come out early, as he has first-round
potential if he were to continue showing improvement
as an all-around performer… as of today he is strictly
a vertical threat with an impressive size/speed combination…
COURTNEY TAYLOR (Auburn)… has big play ability
to go along with an impressive blend of size and speed…
grabbed 43 catches for 737 yards, as a sophomore… while
not being a household name in many circles because of
his average stats this season, 20 catches for 264 yards,
he could make significant strides in the post-season
should he decide to enter the draft… roughly 6020, 202-208
pounds… has been timed between 4.48-4.56 in the 40...
was slowed for a portion of this season with an ankle
injury… his primary reason for declaring early would
be to provide for his family, as he has a young daughter
that he would like to provide for now rather than waiting
another year… said he would declare if he obtained a
first day grade… most area scouts feel that would be
a tight fit right now, as he is seen as more of an early
second day choice…
SANTONIO HOLMES (Ohio State)… exciting playmaker
that has let many around the Columbus campus that he
intends to make the jump to the pros after this season…
he will have the chance to play at least one more game
on the big stage against Notre Dame at the Fiesta Bowl
before heading for greener pastures… his extra burst
in the open field, and ability to return kicks/punts
should help his final grade… roughly 5110, 188-192 pounds…
has been timed in the low-to-mid 4.4 range in the 40...
drawbacks would be that he is more of a vertical threat
as of today, and was able to draw a lot of single coverage
due to the fact that there was always the fear factor
of fellow receiver Ted Ginn being lined up on the opposite
side of him… none-the-less he would likely receive a
first or second grade from the league, which he has
requested from the NFL Advisory Committee…
STEVE SMITH (USC)… seemingly flies under the
radar with all the talent on the Trojans offensive side
of the ball… terrific secondary option, always runs
out his routes, while averaging nearly 17 yards per
catch… not as flashy as some of his more touted teammates,
but a solid #3 type wide receiver for the next level…
just about 6000, 180-185 pounds… has been timed in the
4.50 range in the 40... has good wheels, but lacks game-breaking
speed, and most West Coast scouts think he's a step
behind former Trojans' wide receiver Keary Colbert (Carolina)
in terms of potential/ability… sources close to him
say that he has requested his current NFL grade, and
will review it closely after the team's bowl game…
DROUZON QUILLEN (Louisiana-Monroe)… trust me
when I say we are not just throwing him into this group
without having given him a full evaluation… has unique
natural size, smooth, long stride and has averaged roughly
18 yards per catch for his career… very long arms, and
should measure out between 6050 and 6060... has a long
frame, impressive leaping ability and the coaching staff
says he has 4.5 range speed… there is every indication
that he will at least research his draft options now
that their season has ended… the fact that the team's
starting quarterback, Steven Jyles, just completed his
senior year is also playing a role in this decision,
as he does want to have his stats suffer due to inconsistent
QB play in 2006...
DWAYNE BOWE (LSU)… another player that is not
really being sited for his above-average potential to
become a top-notch pro receiver… the Tigers have recruited
heavily at the receiver position the past two years,
but it is Bowe who has become the team's go-to big play
artist… averaging just under 18 yards per catch, while
scoring eight touchdowns on just 32 receptions… roughly
6030, 217-220 pounds… has been time in the mid-4.5 range
in the 40... still has a few drops and mental lapses
in his game… but has a thicker body type than many of
the other smaller receivers that could opt to declare
early, which would give him the chance to soar during
post-season evaluation…
CHAD JACKSON (Florida)… smooth-looking route
runner with good size, but has not always shown the
blazing speed (4.39-4.42) he possesses on the field…
has 82 catches and nine touchdowns this season, but
is averaging just 10 yards per catch… may look to test
the waters, but it could cost him $100,000's of dollars,
as he has first-round talent, but probably would go
between rounds 2-3 this year, as of today, but he could
jump up the charts with an impressive post-season performance,
especially if he were to run 4.4 range or better at
the Combine… head coach Urban Meyer's offensive system
should take flight, pun intended, next season, where
Jackson would join fellow senior, quarterback, Chris
Leak in what could become a lethal combination… there
are other evaluators that feel his size/speed combination
could allow him to rise up the draft boards in similar
fashion to last year's Top-10 pick Troy Williamson (Minnesota)…
meanwhile, one of his fellow teammates and wide receivers,
ANDRE CALDWELL, intends to comeback for his final year
with the Gators…
RYAN MOORE (Miami, FL)… was the team's third-leading
receiver with 28 catches for 464 yards and four touchdowns…
big-bodied receiver who has the frame to be a tremendous
threat in the middle of the field… has also shown great
run-after-catch skills… good leaper… runs good, but
not great routes… tends to do things at ½ to ¾ speed
at times when he is not the primary target on a play…
exhibits good blocking technique… just about 6030, 215
pounds, but could probably play at 225 pounds without
losing any speed (4.55)/athleticism… played football
and basketball at the prep level, and is said to have
between 38"-40" vertical… missed time last year with
a foot injury and was red-shirted during the 2002 season…
has been going back-and-fourth with his decision… was
not happy with his role in the offense, the quarterback
play and how the team, himself included, played down
the stretch… last month it seemed like he was leaning
towards going back for his senior year, but now, if
he were to receive back at least a day one grade it
would surprise no one to see him jump to the pros… flashes
first round-type ability, but too inconsistent at this
point to be considered more than a third round-type
prospect… was suspended by the coaching staff for violating
team policy, which according to insiders came after
he failed a recent drug test, so he will not get the
chance to play in the upcoming Peach Bowl… this will
likely end his time in South Beach, so he now has roughly
six weeks to cleanup his act before the Combine…
AUNDRAE ALLISON (East Carolina)… jumped from
a very successful JC career at Georgia Military Academy
to making an instant impact on the Pirates' offensive
attack… the staff knew they had something special when
he caught five passes for 94 yards, including a 30-yard
touchdown in the team's spring scrimmage… went on to
produce the school's first-ever 1,000-yard campaign
by a wide receiver… had 83 catches for 1,024 yards and
seven touchdowns, while also successfully running seven
reverses for 65 yards… did not see extended action on
special teams, as a junior, but previously had been
a dangerous kickoff and punt returner at both the JC
and prep level… he's just under 6010, 190-192 pounds…
was timed in the early-to-mid 4.4 range in the 40-yard
dash at the JC level… wanted to explore his NFL options
before suffering a torn MCL injury to his right knee
against UAB late last month (November 26th)… has already
started his rehab, which will take up to 2-3 months,
so the option of declaring off of his stellar junior
campaign seems unlikely, according to several campus
insiders…
JARRETT HICKS (Texas Tech)… ranks second on
the team with 62 catches for 799 yards and nine touchdowns…
holds school record for career touchdown receptions
with 27 and single-season touchdown receptions with
13, as a sophomore… missed the first game of the season
against Florida International due to an undisclosed
injury… best games of the season have come against Texas
A&M and Kansas… tall, angular framed kid that runs with
a long stride… has shown the ability to chew up yardage
after the catch… has room to bulk up and get stronger,
which would allow him to become a serious threat in
the middle of the field… also shows some potential as
a down field blocker… just under 6030, 215 pounds… has
been timed between 4.52-4.56 in the 40-yard dash, but
previously ran 4.45 at 195 pounds, plus he was a standout
track & field runner in his prep days; 22.1 in the 200-meters
and 47.9 in the 400-meters… recently told local reporters
that he would consider the pros based on the grade he
receives back from the NFL Advisory Committee…
CORY RODGERS (TCU)… established himself as one
of the top two-way receiver/return man threats in the
country this season… has scored a total of 12 touchdowns
this season, including five receiving, five rushing
and two on kickoff returns… returned kickoffs of 100
and 87 yards against BYU and SMU, respectively… averaged
31.7 yards per kickoff return overall, which led the
nation, and 13.4 yards per punt return… has already
gained 4,633 yards of total offense in his first three
seasons… while also being the school's second all-time
leader in touchdown catches with 17, currently tied
with former NFL receiver Mike Renfro… has an explosive
burst of speed in the open field… terrific agility and
can slip tackles, keep his balance and get back to full
speed in 1-2 steps… he's just about 6010, 195 pounds…
has been timed between 4.46-4.53 in the 40... played
as an option-type quarterback during his prep days,
so he red-shirted during his true freshman year in order
to adjust to the wide receiver position… possesses the
ability to be dangerous on gadget plays, since he can
run or pass off a reverse… submitted his request to
receive back his current value, so while he may not
be as well-known nationally as some of the others on
this list there is a legitimate chance he could earn
a late 3rd-to-4th round grade based mostly on his potential
as a difference-maker on special teams…
TROY BERGERON (Georgia, AFL)… recently turned
22-year old (12/03/83) migrated from the AF2 as a 20-year
old rookie to becoming the youngest AFL Rookie of the
Year in 2005... he had several big offers out of high
school, but circumstances led him to take a different
path to success... has terrific combination of speed
and quickness... impressive natural return skills...
and should fill out to being roughly 6020, 198-205 pounds
thanks to his off-season training regiment... has previously
been timed at 4.33/4.38 in the 40 and 3.90 in the short
shuttle at AFL/AF2 workouts, plus he has been hitting
close to 20 reps of 225 pounds, while training with
Kurt Hester in Louisiana… will get his shot to play
against pro caliber prospects at this year's Las Vegas
All-American Classic, which could earn him an invite
to the Combine… if not he could perform Pro Day workouts
in Columbus, GA or the New Orleans metro city area…
one side issue has been the fact that the Georgia Force
(AFL) has been very tight with releasing any of his
game tapes for others to review… had a few drops during
the AFL contests we reviewed, but also shows very good
field vision and presence, especially on returns… can
come off as having a rough exterior or demeanor, but
is a quiet guy off-the-field, who has taken all the
necessary steps to earn a shot to now impress NFL scouts…
TYRONE TIMMONS (Mississippi Valley State)… was
named first-team All-SWAC after catching 62 passes for
1,059 yards and eight touchdowns, as a junior… former
quarterback who was converted to receiver a few years
back… has taken his game up a notch each of the past
two years… blew up in games against Southern U. and
Alabama State, as he grabbed 22 catches for 388 yards
and three scores in those two games alone… tall, long-armed
pass catcher who eats up yardage after the catch… shows
an extra gear of speed in the open field, which has
scouts excited… add to that his terrific natural size;
6030, 215 pounds… has been timed in the 4.40 range in
the 40, while also exhibiting eye-opening leaping ability
(38" vertical)… he's being coaches by Willie Totten,
the same mentor to Jerry Rice twenty-plus years ago…
his name is starting to make the rounds, but it will
be in full effect by next summer… potentially will be
Senior Bowl bound after next season…
JAMES BANKS (Ex-Tennessee)… initially moved
to Franklin CC (Indiana) in order to work on his grades
so that he would be eligible for this past season after
falling out of favor with the Tennessee staff for violating
team rules on several occasions… openly talks and admits
the off-field issues that caused him to miss out on
the chance to potentially be one of the top receivers
in the SEC the past two years… family members say he
has not had any issues and would test clean if requested…
received interest from several programs, including Indiana,
St. Francis, Lindenwood and several small schools in
the state of Tennessee… opted to sit out this season,
and return for his senior campaign at Division II powerhouse
Carson-Newman next year… some folks still think that
he might shift gears again and opt for the draft… as
of today, he has been attending all of his classes,
and is in good academic standing for the start of the
winter semester…
CHANSI STUCKEY (Clemson)… has 62 catches for
761 yards and four touchdowns, as a junior… shows elusive
moves in the open field, especially on returns… his
vast talents have finally come to surface this past
season, as he found a home at wide receiver… roughly
5104, 180 pounds… has been timed in the 4.42-4.48 range
in the 40-yard dash, but is also equally impressive
in the agility drills portion of his workouts… pound-for-pound
one of the strongest guys on the team… capable of being
a standout on special teams, both on returns and coverage
units; has even blocked a few kicks… also served as
the team's backup quarterback earlier in his career…
versatile athlete who while not as thickly built as
former Tigers' standout Woody Dantzler has many of the
same talents… late round type grade, as of today, but
some people around campus say he wants to receive his
grade anyway…
ERIC DESLAURIERS (Eastern Michigan)… has long
arms, big hands and ideal body type for the NFL if he
add some muscle to his current frame… also has a nice
blend of size and big-play ability, which might allow
him to be seen as a potential late round draft prospect…
just under 6030, 201-208 pounds… initial estimates on
his 40-times varies depending on who you ask with the
program… if the NFL does not come calling initially
than he should at the very least get a shot in the CFL,
possibly as a first-round pick this or next year, since
he was born in Quebec, where he played quarterback before
coming to the states for college, and being converted
to wide receiver… his stock could improve if he plays
out the final year of his college career, and runs better
than the expected 4.60 range 40-time…
HENRY TOLBERT (Grambling State)… had a monster
junior campaign, which included 71 catches for 1,297
yards and 18 touchdowns, while averaging 18.3 yards
per catch... turned a number of short-to-intermediate
catches into long gains… pretty elusive in the open
field... had seven 100-yard games this season, including
three straight to finish the year… even more impressive
was that he scored a total of eight touchdowns in the
team's final two victories to capture both the Bayou
Classic over Southern U. and then SWAC Championship
against Alabama A&M… just about 5110, 195-200 pounds…
estimated by one staff member at-or-below 4.50 in the
40... big-play artist against the team's on his schedule,
but was held to just three catches for 35 yards and
one touchdown versus Washington State... has speculated
to family members that he might opt to declare since
record-setting quarterback Bruce Eugene has played his
final game at the college level… fears that his stats/grade
could slide if the QB play is inconsistent next season...
ALBERT TURNER (Southern U.)… the diminutive
speedster was more of a supporting role player, as a
junior… averaging 16.2 yards on just ten catches, but
flashed exciting open field moves and special teams
potential, as a kickoff return man… averaged 27.9 yards
per return, including a long of 84 yards… was banged
up a little late in the season… he's only 5070, 160
pounds, but one staff member said he could run in the
4.3 range when healthy… it has been speculated to us
that he may have asked for his grade, more out of curiosity…
should get a free agent look after his senior year,
but if you want an underclassmen to keep an eye on it
would be fellow wide receiver GERARD LANDRY, who is
just a sophomore, but had a breakout game against Grambling
State in the Bayou Classic with ten catches for 123
yards…
TIGHT END:
VERNON DAVIS (Maryland)… easily the top-rated
player at this position which ever year he opts into
the draft… averaging over 17 yards per catch with six
touchdowns, while hauling in 51 receptions this season…
his level of all-around play, especially against Florida
State, offers a glimpse of things to come… seems to
be just starting to scratch the surface of his upside
potential… will run sub-4.5 with 38" vertical and 30-plus
reps of 225 pounds, while weighing between 242-250 pounds…
outgoing kid that is still humble about his ability
and potential to be taken so high in draft… known as
a guy that keeps the locker room light and laughing,
but knows when to get serious and down to business…
could be Top 10-to-15 pick based on his position and
workout results…
ANTHONY FASANO (Notre Dame)… since he is roommates
with quarterback Brady Quinn it is likely that should
Quinn return that Fasano would do the same… while you
hate to make comparisons he is clearly one of the best
all-around tight ends to come down the road in several
years… just about 6040, 255-258 pounds… has been timed
in mid-4.80 range in the 40... plays the game with great
emotion and is nearly automatic on third down, and has
the chance to develop into an 8-10 touchdown guy in
the NFL, while also having the ability to handle himself
as an in-line blocker at the line of scrimmage… has
first-round potential in each of the next two drafts…
according to a few close associates he is preparing
for the Fiesta Bowl like it may be his final game with
the Irish, but that is more in case the NFL tells him
he's a sure-fire first round choice…
LEONARD POPE (Georgia)… has rare size and athleticism
for the position… shows excellent balance and eats up
yardage after the catch… not always as effective as
you would like as a blocker, especially at the point
of attack… plays a little high and without leverage,
but he has such long arms and big frame that he should
be able to improve in those areas… just about 6065,
250-258 pounds… has been timed between 4.58-4.65 in
the 40-yard dash, while at a similar size… he's nimble
for his size, and such a red-zone threat that it would
be hard for him to escape the mid-to-late portion of
the first round of the draft… has also spent time talking
and interviewing with several agents throughout most
of the season…
CLARK HARRIS (Rutgers)… while his teammate,
fullback Brian Leonard, has gotten most of the press
clippings, he may prove out to be his equal in terms
of pro prospects… averaged over 15 yards per catch with
four scores this season… has good natural size, makes
clutch receptions on a regular basis in-spite of being
double-teamed most of the time or shadowed in the middle
field… tough, physical kid that plays with an edge to
his game, which should help him make it on special teams
too… has caught at least one pass in 30 straight games,
including six catches for 85 yards and one touchdown
against Arizona State in their recent bowl game loss…
just about 6060, 255-259 pounds… has been timed in the
low-to-mid 4.80 range in the 40... has initially stated
he plans to return for next season, but may entertain
his options by receiving his current draft grade…
MATT SPAETH (Minnesota)… another imposing figure
in the middle of the field thanks to his height and
wide frame… while offering a sizeable target for his
quarterback he is also not slow-footed, which offers
him the chance to be dangerous weapon on intermediate
routes… just over 6060, 272 pounds… has been timed in
the mid-to-high 4.80 range in the 40... improving as
a blocker, as he still gets his pads too high at times,
but his natural lower body size/strength has helped
him progress as a run blocker the past two years… Gophers
would have an excellent shot of being among the Top-5
teams in the Big Ten next year should he return, especially
since his returning quarterback would also be a senior…
GREG OLSEN (Miami, FL)… many forget that he
red-shirted in 2003 due to a shoulder injury, so that
after this season he will be three years removed from
high school, and therefore draft-eligible should he
be so inclined… suffered a setback last season, his
first with the Hurricanes, missing time due to a wrist
injury, but has returned at full-strength as a red-shirt
sophomore to make some of the most impressive catches
of the year at his position… has also served as a long
snapper for punts in the past with fine results… has
the prototype body for the NFL to go along with excellent
athleticism and the ability to become a high-impact
performer at the next level thanks to his hands, routes
and agility in the open field… with another year under
his belt he could challenge to be one of the Top-10
picks of the 2007 NFL Draft, but would likely still
receive a first-round grade should he request it now…
our opinion is that although there is less tape to grade/evaluate
on him than the others in this group that down-the-line
he will be the standout of this class…
Finally, without the false-hype of Chevon Troutman,
who attempted to potentially convert from college basketball
player at Pittsburgh to tight end prospect last year,
a name to consider in that mold is ERIC HICKS
(Cincinnati)… the Big East power forward has an excellent
blend of size, athleticism and potential interest in
reviewing the process… he's 6056, 250 pounds… his older
brother, Derrick, played football at North Carolina
A&T… has started to draw interest from NBA teams thanks
to his ability to rebound and block shots… looks to
be athletic enough running the floor and has big hands,
plus active footwork…
OFFENSIVE LINEMEN:
MIKE JONES (Iowa)… the anchor of the team's
offensive line from his right tackle spot… follows in
the recent line of strong blockers to come down the
pike, as he has matured into his body over the past
few years, while also improving his strength at the
point of attack and technique… will use the advice of
head coach Kirk Ferentz, as well as likely soliciting
his current draft grade from the NFL Advisory Committee
before making a final decision… moves well for a 6050,
305-pound right tackle, but may need a final year of
seasoning in order to be considered a sure-fire first
rounder… especially since there are not many area scouts
that have even mentioned the idea of evaluating him
over on the left side, so unless you have a left-handed
signal caller, his grade would slip a few spots below
the top-rated left tackle prospects…
JOE THOMAS (Wisconsin)… has the potential to
be a solid early-to-mid first round selection in either
of the next two drafts… exhibits the type of footwork
and dexterity to remain at left tackle, and become an
anchor at that spot for a franchise in need of a blocker
of his stature… shows the attitude and determination
of a player with far less natural ability… just about
6070, 295-302 pounds… has been timed between 4.92-5.00
in the 40... while not a finished product, as he still
has had some struggles against a few quicker pass rushers…
but he has long arms and very good footwork… he tends
to get crossed up when defenders dart inside first and
then come back outside… handles the spin move well,
as he is athletic enough to gather his feet underneath
his body and re-adjust if he does not initially get
his hands on the pass rusher… what bodes well for him
is that he still has time to mature into his frame,
and could likely add an additional twenty pounds of
bulk without sacrificing any of his footwork… also athletic
enough that the staff may use him some at defensive
end in the team's bowl game… any type of decision is
not expected until after the team's bowl game, but his
draft status seems pretty high at the moment; could
potentially go as high as the middle of the first round…
DOUG FREE (Northern Illinois)… potentially the
best of this group in-spite of the fact that he hails
from the MAC and not Big Ten… has impressive natural
size, but moves with the footwork of a player much lighter…
some of his own coaches say he would be athletic enough
to play tight end in the pros had he desired… rarely
over-extends, but has the wingspan and footwork to keep
in front of most pass rushers… in-spite of the fact
that he is nearly 6060, 305-310 pounds, he could potentially
run in the 4.90 range in the 40... tackles with the
ability to become "Franchise" left tackles normally
do not fall too far past the early-to-mid portion of
the first round of the draft… so while his last name
might be "Free" this is one player that won't come cheaply
when it's his time to enter the pros…
WINSTON JUSTICE (USC)… returned to the starting
lineup at right tackle after sitting out last season
after he was involved with an off-field legal issue;
plead guilty to exhibiting a replica firearm, which
is a misdemeanor offense… has seemingly taken some steps
to mature, since he has said very little and let most
of his talking be said with his on-field results… has
a long upper-body frame without sacrificing too much
of his footwork or quickness… just about 6060, 298-305
pounds… has been timed between 4.92-5.00 in the 40...
still needs to improve upon his overall strength as
a blocker, he will also over-extend at times, and does
not always play at the same level from one series to
the next… had surgery to repair a dislocated right shoulder
in 2002, and also has had a few problems with his ankle…
is also still fairly new to the game, as he did not
start playing football until his sophomore year in high
school… could eventually become a bona-fide starting
tackle in the pros, but could fall short of his draft
expectations if he opted to declare early… however,
he's the type of kid that some offensive line coach
will fall in love with, since he has the footwork to
be tried at left tackle, his "Potential" to be a "Coach-Killer"
is just as high as his ability to be the future protector
of a quarterback's blindside…
JUSTIN BLALOCK (Texas)… has a unique blend of
size, strength and quickness… his versatile skills as
a blocker have allowed him to play both tackle and guard
during his first three years at UT… body-type may be
better served at an interior position, but his footwork
might be too much to pass up at tackle… slides into
position against quicker edge rushers… capable of using
his strength to pancake opponents at the line of scrimmage,
but also shows the movement skills to crush LB's and
DB's downfield… very good finisher… bright kid who does
well in the classroom; finalist for the Watkins Award
coming out of high school… just about 6040, 329 pounds…
has been timed between 5.00-5.10 in the 40-yard dash
at a similar weight… has shed a few extra pounds, as
he once weighed over 340 pounds… capable of dunking
a basketball, while also bench-pressing over 400 pounds
and squatting over 550 pounds… besides being a first-rate
offensive lineman he also was a standout member of his
high school's track & field team… "Big Bank" has first-round
ability, so if the Longhorns were to capture the championship
with a win over USC it could lead to him making the
decision to jump to the pros…
WILLIE HALL (Middle Tennessee State)… recently
announced his initial intentions to enter the 2006 NFL
Draft... the 6-foot-6, 302-pound blocker has started
for the Blue Raiders at left tackle the past few seasons,
earning All-Conference honors, and could work himself
into being a solid mid-round selection... his best games
have come against the top pass rushers he has faced,
including Troy, Tennessee and Vanderbilt… however, his
position coach, Scott Fountain, did not give him as
high a praise as anticipated, saying he felt he was
more of a work-in-progress, which would lead him to
believe more like the 6th or 7th round pick… former
South Carolina wide receivers coach Rick Stockstill
was just named the new head coach at MTSU, so one of
his new first priorities would have been to re-recruit
his starting left tackle back onto next year's roster,
but Hall had already decided to sign with an agent…
KYLE YOUNG (Fresno State)… in most other year's
it might be a worthwhile investment for a center of
his caliber to entertain the idea of jumping to the
pros early, but this year's crop of pivot men is pretty
solid, so it will likely impact his decision… roughly
6050, 325 pounds… has been timed in the low-to-mid 5.20
range in the 40... coach Hill has not lost too many
of his mainstay players to the draft, which would lead
one to believe that he will have his starting center
back for his senior campaign… still some area scouts
on the West Coast have said he could go as high as the
second round… a pair of other junior interior linemen
who might also request their current grades, include
ANTHONY WOLLSCHLAGER (Miami, FL) and JOSHUA BEEKMAN
(Boston College)… Wollschlager has primarily played
center, while Beekman has started the past two seasons
at right guard, but may also be evaluated at center
because of his size/smarts…
MANUEL RAMIREZ (Texas Tech)… while many will
say the Red Raiders are a finesse offense, there is
very little finesse about this guy's game… he's a beast
in the middle of their offensive line, having manned
a starting position, mostly right guard, since his freshman
year… wide-based blocker who plays with a nasty streak
and has a lunch-pail work ethic to match… smart kid
that is well-spoken… bench presses in excess of 550
pounds, but is still able to get off his initial block
and get downfield to a linebacker… powerful upper-body
allows him to pancake and finish off most of his opponents…
just over 6030, 335-343 pounds… has been timed between
5.35-5.39 in the 40... has primarily started at right
guard during his career, but keen evaluators might also
take a look at him inside at center, a position he dominated
as a prep standout… his name is not well-known outside
of area scouts, for now, but could be a surprise day
one selection should he opt to go that way early…
SAMSON SATELE (Hawaii)… a tough-as-nails Polynesian
who thrives on contact and brings the type of intensity
that line coaches crave… roughly 6030, 285-290 pounds…
has been timed between 4.85-4.90 in the 40... he's not
the biggest offensive guard in college football, but
he might very well be the stoutest… has the work ethic
you desire, and moves very well for a guy that can also
bench press the building… pays close attention to his
technique and pretty well-rounded in terms of not being
a "Wild" card off-the-field… plays aggressively, but
also under control… not often flagged, and allowed only
one sack in his first 754 snaps on passing downs… several
members of the coaching staff, including head coach
June Jones say that he may be the best of the recent
crop of Warriors' linemen… could earn himself as high
as a second round grade thanks to his potential to step
right in and start as a rookie…
FRED MATUA (USC)… an under-rated performer who
has been just as dominate as any other Trojans' lineman
from his right guard spot over the past two years… has
a good combination of power and quickness in his game…
capable of getting to his spot when asked to pull, and
athletic enough to make blocks on the move… makes good
use of his hands inside… not always a great finisher,
but keeps his body in front of his man, showing very
good balance for a large-based blocker… roughly 6036,
304-310 pounds… has been timed in the 4.90 range in
the 40... has more athleticism, but much less bulk,
than senior teammate Taitusi Lutui, who is also being
evaluated as an offensive guard… has not spoken about
moving on after his junior campaign, but while he could
earn between a 3rd-to-4th round grade it would not be
surprising to see a team jump on him earlier, since
he should have the chance to crack someone's starting
lineup earlier than others…
BEN GRUBBS (Auburn)… steadily improving member
of the Tigers offensive line… he's played next to All-American
offensive tackle Marcus McNeill the past few years,
as their starting left guard… has shown good improvement
in most facets of his game the last two years… has gotten
stronger at the point of attack… started to finish more
of his blocks this season… moves well and can get out
and be an effective downfield blocker… has good size
at just about 6030, 302-310 pounds… has been timed between
5.03-5.10 in the 40... will likely return for his senior
campaign, as should fellow teammate and offensive guard
TIMOTHY DUCKWORTH (Auburn)… he mans the right
guard spot on the Tigers' line, and might just be the
team's most improved offensive lineman throughout the
past 12 months… has a massive lower body, which gives
him a wide-base… which he uses to anchor on run plays
and halt opposing pass rushers at the point of attack…
his technique tends to slide when he wears down, but
his conditioning is improving… thick-bodied guy who
has pretty nimble feet, and is a pancake machine when
he gets moving off the line of scrimmage… roughly 6032,
326-330 pounds… has been timed in the 5.10-5.16 range
in the 40... while Grubbs may get more of the praise
from SEC media observers my preference for the next
level would be Duckworth… his returning grade could
put him among the Top-5 guards in the country for the
2007 NFL Draft…
WILLIE HENDERSON (Memphis)…massively built interior
lineman who has helped lead the way for start running
back DeAngelo Williams from his right guard spot… impressive
stature with long arms and wide frame… just about 6040,
325-330 pounds… has been timed in the low-to-mid 5.20
range in the 40... has mauler-type attributes… was initially
recruited as a defensive lineman, but shifted over to
offensive tackle before settling in at guard in 2004...
earned the title of being the team's Most Improved Offensive
Linemen after his spring performance a year ago, and
has been in the starting lineup ever since… red-shirted
as a freshman due to a minor chest procedure that cost
him to sit out his initial campaign… while his size,
power and aggressiveness are what initially attract
your eyes to him, he was also a standout basketball
player and member of his school's track & field team
in high school… under-rated in many circles, but the
type of kid that could be a real comer in the right
offensive system…
ROBERT SMITH (Tennessee)… no, he's not related
to the former NFL running back with the same name, but
recently, he has been nearly as outspoken after seeing
his position coach fired after a very disappointing
2005 campaign… has potentially been the team's most
consistent blocker the past two years from his left
guard position… shows very good strength at the point
of attack, and plays with a nasty streak on the field…
just about 6030, 305-308 pounds… bench presses over
450 pounds and runs right around 5.00 in the 40... well-liked
by his coaches and teammates… has both mauler and finesse
type tools, which could make him a candidate to start
early at the pro level… the staff expects to be able
to calm him down, and have him return for what could
be an All-American senior season… fellow junior offensive
lineman, ARRON SEARS, is also thought to be looking
to receive his current NFL grade… roughly 6040, 325
pounds… has been timed between 5.20-5.28 in the 40...
would be wise to return, as well, since he is not seen
as a sure-fire left tackle by all 32 teams, which could
cause him to slip into the second day if he came out
early…
LEROY HARRIS (N.C. State)… versatile performer
that is capable of playing either center or guard at
the next level… just under 6030, 295 pounds… has been
timed between 5.00-5.09 in the 40-yard dash... He is
already married, and thinking about getting on with
his life and family commitments, but has not openly
discussed the idea of jumping to the NFL… has very good
strength, while also being able to pull and move well
from his center spot… would likely receive a solid mid-round
grade…
COREY HILLIARD (Oklahoma State)… previously
started outside at tackle for the Cowboys before being
moved to right guard during spring drills, so that the
team could put the best five blockers on the field…
at just under 6050, 295-300 pounds… has been timed between
5.12-5.20 in the 40... coaching staff says that he is
one of the most naturally gifted linemen they have had
in recent history… it's been a down year for them, but
with many returning starters it would not be a surprise
to see them bounce back with a strong campaign in 2006...
there was a time that some felt he could work his way
into being a sure-fire day one pick, but that would
now be more likely should he return to Stillwater for
his final season, which would also allow him to move
back outside to tackle…
JAKE KURESA (BYU)… has been a starter on the
team's offensive line the past three years after red-shirting
as a freshman… primarily at right tackle, he has a wide-body,
but is not as tall as advertised… was originally recruited
as a defensive lineman… shows some good quickness and
lateral movement for his size… not a great finisher…
still needs to work on his overall technique and have
his size/strength translate onto the field more often…
better pass protector than run blocker as of today…
seems to have more of an interior lineman body type…
just over 6040, 327-335 pounds… has been timed in the
5.25-5.30 range in the 40, while at that size… played
well against a solid Boston College front four, but
struggles against quicker, edge rush types at times…
more of a late-round type prospect…
BRIAN DANIELS (Colorado)… has an excellent combination
of smarts, quickness and an all-out nasty streak when
he wants to… quick off the ball, as he normally initiates
contact with defenders… just about 6040, 302-310 pounds…
has been timed in the 5.20 range in the 40... still
has room to improve as a pass blocker… there are still
moments where he tries to bully or push/shove opposing
defenders rather than using ideal technique… the senior
offensive guard class is considered to be light at the
top by some area scouts, which could allow someone like
this to slide up the charts quickly should they enter
the draft…
JOSEPH STALEY (Central Michigan)… many will
look at this list and say "Who?" when they get to this
name… but anyone who has watched his development and
evaluates his upside potential will nod quickly in agreement…
a former tight end, who still has a long, lean body
type, but room to grow into a legitimate 300-plus pound
tackle over the next few years… currently, he is just
about 6050, 283-288 pounds… has been timed in the mid-to-late
4.80 range in the 40... has the type of footwork and
athleticism to remain at left tackle, but would get
over-powered by most experienced NFL defenders at this
point… while it would seem unlikely for him to declare
a year early keep this name in the back of your mind,
as he could progress from obscurity to day one status
over the next 12 months.
SPECIALIST:
MASON CROSBY (Colorado)… it is rare that you
find a specialist that could entertain the idea of leaving
school early, but with his combination of leg strength,
accuracy and ability to convert kicks in the clutch
would likely earn him the shot to be taken on the first
day of the draft, considering the lack of a consensus
top-rated senior kicker… has nailed 11 field goals of
50-plus yards in just the past two years, while 75%
of his kickoffs have gone for touchbacks this season…
recently had the distance to convert a 60-plus yard
field goal against Nebraska… would most likely earn
a third round grade, but could go even higher on draft
day, since there would be a core group of 6-to-8 teams
that would be salivating for a kicker of his prominence…
DEVIN HESTER (Miami, FL)… his speed and return
skills are unquestioned, but he is yet to prove himself
as a position player on either side of the ball… could
be a combination wide receiver/running back or given
the chance to develop as a cornerback… might prove to
just be a speedy jack-of-all-trades… roughly 5100, 175-180
pounds… has been timed between 4.29-4.35 in the 40...
whispers about him opting to come out have been circulating
since the start of the year, but he could rise come
draft day, especially for anyone desperate for help
on special teams… the coaching staff has promised him
a great role on the offensive side of the ball if he
returns, but several associates continue to be in his
ear about having to play cornerback in order to improve
his NFL grade… has spoke to several former U-M players,
as well as a few standout NFL players, including Deion
Sanders, who have offered him advice about his short-term
and long-term career… should he decide to enter the
NFL his plans are to workout primarily at defensive
back and working to run the fastest 40-times possible
at the Combine… there are some scouts that say he could
position himself as high as the second round with a
big effort at the Combine…
JEREMY BLOOM (Ex-Colorado)… first things first,
he will compete in the upcoming 2006 Winter Olympics…
but as soon as he is done conquering the slopes, he
intends to blaze a path towards the NFL… his intention
is to submit his official paper work before leaving
for the Olympics, and then pickup his "Cross" training
when he returns in late February… "(I) have done everything,
and achieved everything when it comes to skiing, but
there is still one more level of football that (I) want
to conquer… to reach that level, and play on Sunday's…
that's my new goal, the next step in my life", said
Bloom when asked about the NFL earlier this year… while
only 5090, 165 pounds, he has exhibited eye-opening
speed on the field, having scored five touchdowns that
covered 75-or-more yards in his brief time with the
Buffaloes… most believe that he can run in the 4.3 range,
since he ran 9.40 in the 100-meters a few years back…
pound-for-pound he's very strong for his size, and more
importantly he's crazy fast, in the sense that he can
reach full speed in just one or two steps… has natural
vision on the field, as well as a feel for the return
game… his private workouts in the spring will be well
attended, so although he has limited game film there
will be a chance his name could be called in the later
rounds of April's Draft… has gotten advice about his
NFL aspirations from people like John Elway, Ben Roethlisberger
and Hines Ward…
DEFENSIVE LINEMEN:
MARIO WILLIAMS (N.C. State)… an exciting pass
rushing presence since his first day on campus... has
recorded 48 tackles for loss and 24 sacks thus far in
his college career… may have the longest wingspan of
any defensive end in college football… still learning
how to always play with his pads low and with the right
leverage/balance… can struggle at times against big,
physical blockers... there have been too many moments
this season where he has played without a great deal
of emotion or urgency, seemingly happy or content to
just make plays in spurts… might be a guy that needs
a kick in the butt every now and then… has good instincts,
sees the ball/play well off the snap, but could still
do a better job of mixing up his moves… while he is
roughly 6066, 290 pounds he has less than 7% body fat…
equally impressive might be the fact that he should
time in the 4.6 range in the 40, as well… would figure
to be one of the first ten players selected in either
of the next two drafts…
QUENTIN MOSES (Georgia)…has recorded 10.5 sacks,
19.5 tackles for loss and 36 QB hurries, as a junior…
shows excellent long-range potential as an edge rusher…
still has more of a basketball players build, especially
in the upper-body… long, rangy frame, but terrific jumping
ability for a big man… capable of adding twenty pounds
of bulk/muscle over the next few years without sacrificing
any of his athleticism… just under 6050, 248-253 pounds…
has been timed between the low-to-mid 4.70 range in
the past, while at a similar weight… susceptible to
bigger, more physical blockers… tends to dominate in
flashes, but needs to learn how to play more consistently
at that high level, especially against the run… height
can hinder him at times, as he will get high off the
snap and play with poor leverage… their top three interior
defenders are graduating, so that could be a big influence
on his final decision… also red-shirted as a freshman,
so he already 22 years-old, which gives a slight bit
more maturity then some of the other members on this
list…
DANIEL BAZUIN (Central Michigan)… second in
the nation with 16.5 sacks, while adding 26.5 tackles
for loss, five forced fumbles and a total of 74 tackles…
has a solid, compact build, but may prove to be a little
shorter than advertised when the time comes… terrific
first step off the ball, combined with a highly-competitive
attitude and non-stop motor… struggled against Penn
State this season with only three tackles and no sacks,
but was banged up some for that game… has shattered
the school record for sacks in a season (nine) this
year… bright kid who carries a near 3.5 GPA… more of
a country than kid city, grew up in the state of Michigan,
and still loves a lot of outdoor activities and leads
by his example for teammates, both on-and-off the field…
"Buzz" uses a combination of pass rush moves, and the
fact that he is usually not satisfied until he makes
or gets into the play in order to disrupt opposing backfields…
may try to bulk up to the 270-pound range to impress
scouts, but has primarily played at between 6020, 257-263
pounds… some staff members say he has been timed in
the 4.70 range in the 40... would prefer to receive
at least a 2nd or 3rd round grade before making a final
decision, but family members say he is leaning towards
going back to school for his senior year…
ADAM CARRIKER (Nebraska)… had 9.5 sacks and
15 tackles for loss on the season… carries his weight
well, as there are very few bad sections to his 6050,
285-pound frame… however, may not be the workout warrior
that others in this category could turn out to be at
an event like the Combine, as he is likely more of a
mid-to-late 4.80 type speed guy in the 40-yard dash;
some say he's run as slow as 4.92... can also look a
little stiff at times when trying to change directions
or if his initial move is not successful… not much of
a spin move guy, can be a steady if not spectacular
performer at the next level… looks to be more in the
mold of Chris Kelsey (Buffalo) than Grant Wistrom (Seattle)…
his lack of not having too much more of a higher ceiling
to his game could cost him some spots on draft day…
as according to a few current teammates, he would have
wanted to receive a day one grade before making a decision…
recently, he did a 180-degree turn, saying, "Everything
(I) do is going to be for the last time next year"…
"It's going to have a lot more meaning (to me) just
knowing it's my senior year"… so he now seems to be
gearing up for a senior campaign rather than a jump
to the pros…
RODERKUS WRIGHT (Ex-Oregon/Grossmont JC, CA)…
don't laugh when you read these stats, but keep reading
to better understand how they came about… 65 tackles,
45 tackles for loss, 26.5 sacks, 66 QB hurries, five
blocked kicks, five forced fumbles, five fumble recoveries
and four pass breakups in 13 JC contests this year…
games reviewed include San Jacinto, Victor Valley, Antelope
Valley, College of the Canyons and City College of San
Francisco; many of which he only played into the early
portion of the second half… originally recruited to
Oregon, as one of the team's top high school prospects,
even started several games early in his career… had
16 tackles, four sacks and two forced fumbles, as a
sophomore; watch his performance against USC and first-ever
game versus Idaho… was also athletic enough to play
on several special teams, including kickoff coverage…
struggled with both academics and off-field issues,
as he learned to start maturing while being away from
his home in California… having grown up with several
distractions and issues surrounding him, he took a brief
detour to Portland State, which did not workout, but
finally made a way for himself at the JC level this
season… even helped lead his team to the mythical JC
National Championship… at times this season he looked
like a professional playing against high school level
blockers… has an amazing wingspan to go along with terrific
natural athleticism and rare speed for a player of his
size… plays with good pad level and leverage... still
raw at times, but has shown great maturity over the
past 18 months our staff has spoken with him… which
was never more evident than by one of his recent statements,
"Right now my only goal is to help win this title, so
we can send our coach (Dave Jordan) home with a much-deserved
championship"… has grown into his roughly 6050, 270-pound
frame, nearly 20 pounds heavier than he was back in
2001… has hit between 37.5"-40" on the vertical, while
also being timed between the mid-4.6-to-early-4.7 range
in the 40… now plans take the path less traveled to
the NFL, as he has starting training since the end of
his season… will turn 24 years-old in late March of
2006... could this be the next Eric Swann… only time
will tell…
MOE THOMPSON (Ex-South Carolina/Grambling State)…
was suspended at South Carolina after getting into off-field
trouble that led him to plead guilty to a pair of misdemeanors
after the case against him failed to produce the intended
results… an early December sentencing date produced
no jail term, but five years probation and community
service hours… passed on going to the Magnolia Gridiron
All-Star Classic, so that he could start his community
service hours during the holidays by serving to the
needs of several underprivileged groups in South Carolina
and Mississippi through the Columbia Urban League… likeable
kid that will honestly detail each account of his off-field
troubles… through those trails-and-tribulations he is
still on-target to graduate within a year of his
